August 18, 2008 Lost & Found Meets Bats in the Belfry Playlist w/ Host Bob Dubrow

I filled in this evening for Mistress Laura, "hostrix" of Bats in the Belfry, and turned her long-running show into a showcase for what might be called "proto" or "pre" Goth by featuring only music from the '60s and '70s. The trick was to choose music of a dark, moody, or ethereal nature. Sure, you may think I was taking liberties with her format...but how free can you be when you're tied to the control board by a slave bracelet chain?

Lost & Found Goes Bats!

Well, sort of. This coming Monday, August 18th, I will be performing double duty spinning sounds from the '60s and '70s by hosting my usual alternate Monday Lost & Found block show...and then returning to the airwaves in the evening to fill in for Laura Wilson on her long-running Bats in the Belfry show from 8-10pm. Here is the program guide description of Laura's show:

"Moody, dark, atmospheric, brooding; Mistress Laura's own special blend of gothic and ethereal music from all over the world, USA, and Boston. Beginning with ancient music and chant, to the newest gothic rock, darkwave, and dark ambient."

My take will be a bit different, as I seek out some dark and brooding music from that Lost & Found era of musical time. And yes, that is likely to include at least one song by The Doors.

Fully Octopi'd

This teenage girl, growing up in a California coastal town, was obviously pregnant - stomach starting to swell, morning sickness, etc. She, however, tearfully insisted to her mother that she couldn't possibly be pregnant. She had never "done it" with a boy and it just wasn't possible.

As time went on, however, the signs continued. Her stomach continued to grow, her appetite increased, and so forth. Her mother insisted that she was pregnant. The girl insisted that it wasn't possible. She was still a "good" girl.

Finally x-rays were taken and the girl was vindicated. She had a large tumor in her stomach and surgery was performed immediately. To everyone's amazement the surgeons removed not a tumor but a small, live octopus that had fastened itself to the lining of the girl's stomach.

What happened to this girl is supposedly really possible. Octopus eggs are microscopic in size, and laid in clusters of tens of thousands. They are usually affixed to kelp at the ocean's bottom with a sticky secretion. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that a few could escape and float to the surface where they could be swallowed by an unsuspecting swimmer...

(Note: the above story is obviously not real. It is an urban legend found by me at www.snopes.com, and is categorized as false. Human biology cannot "give birth" to octopi, or, in story variants, frogs, snakes, lizards, fish or insects).

Next, in tribute to my friend Chris "The Electrician" Bruce, who recently passed away. Chris was well known in the psychedelic, progressive, and "Deadhead" music communities in this area. Local radio listeners in the late '80s and '90s may remember him frequently filling in on "Psychedelic Regressions" and "No Commercial Potential" on WZBC, and occasionally on "Lost & Found" here on WMBR.

He was also the major music consultant and one of the hosts for the infamous five-day WHRB "Grateful Dead Orgy" of 1992, and he was an accomplished sound and recording engineer, whose album credits include the band Zero featuring Steve Kimock and the late John Cipollina. He also worked on tours with British progressive band Hawkwind among many others, and helped put together benefit concerts and events locally for Grateful Dead family sponsored charities such as SEVA and the Rex Foundation.

Despite his powerful demons, and that he could never seem to find just what he was searching for in life, I remember Chris as an extremely brilliant, intelligent, creative, caring guy. I hope he's finally relieved of all of the burden and chronic pain that he had been suffering from for many years.
